  • Slowed by the ethyl chloride spray, Spider-Man keeps Smythe talking, hoping the effect will wear off but as soon as it does, Smythe sprays him again and attaches him to the front of his Slayer like a trophy. He returns to his lab where the four gang leaders see the captured web-slinger and agree to Smythe’s scheme. Meanwhile, Gwen meets Flash as she leaves the ESU campus. He tells her he feels more for her than friendship but she insists that she and Peter are for real. She asks Flash what is troubling him but he will not say. Smythe, busy sending his partners on a bank job, leaves Spidey dangling from the ceiling with the Slayer set on automatic. However, Spidey kicks his legs and snaps his bonds like a bullwhip. The Slayer reacts but Spidey gains the cockpit, re-arranging the controls and using the telephone there to contact the police about the scanners. Smythe encases himself behind sliding steel doors. Spidey crosses the city, noticing the police disconnecting the scanners. Just as the gangsters prepare to strike, their video monitors turn to static. Thinking Smythe has double-crossed them, they turn around but Spidey waylays and defeats them. Returning to Smythe’s lab, Spidey fi nds the scientist back inside his Slayer but the wall-crawler’s previous meddling takes effect and the robot malfunctions. Leaving Smythe for the police, Spider-Man visits Jameson and makes him promise to never finance Spider-Slayers again. On his way home, Spidey sees Gwen walking arm-in-arm with Flash. Just then a car pulls up and two military agents usher Flash inside, leaving Gwen behind in tears.
