Unable to leave to pursue Flash’s kidnappers without Gwen thinking him a coward, Peter creates a web dummy in the restroom, then carries it out the window so she thinks Spider-Man has snatched him for questioning. He follows his spider-tracer to Greenwich Village, where Dr. Strange’s astral form meets him. Aware of what has transpired, Strange shows him a vision of Flash being told that he is to be sacrificed to awaken the entranced High Priest. As the pair rush to his rescue, Sha Shan tells Flash she knows he is innocent, but cannot convince the others, and is about to cut his bonds when the monks stop her. Meanwhile Gwen goes to Peter’s apartment, where she informs Harry and May of Peter’s abduction. When May begins to worry, Gwen angrily snaps at her for treating Peter like a child; though she apologizes almost immediately, it is clear her words have struck a chord. Back at the temple Strange and Spider-Man arrive just in time to stop the sacrifice, and Strange awakens the High Priest from his trance. With the monks placated, Flash is free, but Peter worries that he cannot compete with Flash for Gwen’s love.
The Monks of the Hidden Temple refuse to listen when Flash warns them of an imminent bombing. Afterwards Sha Shan helps a shell-shocked Flash back to camp, but returns to the temple to fi nd her fellow monks blaming Flash for the High Priest’s deathlike state.
