Kraven tells the dejected Gibbon how he survived during his last encounter with Spider-Man and Ka-Zar, but swore vengeance on Spider-Man for his alien friend Gog’s death. Still injured, he suggests joining forces; Gibbon agrees, angry at Spider-Man and determined that no one will ever laugh at him again. Meanwhile Spidey enters May’s apartment through a window to fi nd a note from May, saying she has gone away for a while. A neighbor who spotted him entering calls the police; Spidey fl ees, and the police assume he has kidnapped May. Fretting that he has driven May away with his selfi sh attitude, Spidey visits Joe Robertson at the Bugle, showing him the note and claiming Peter asked him to retrieve it. After Spider-Man leaves, Joe forces Jonah to print it, clearing the wall-crawler. Meanwhile Kraven gives Gibbon a potion that fills him with rage and establishes a mental link between them, putting Gibbon under Kraven’s control. After a tired and worried Peter gives Gwen a brush-off when she calls him, he goes out hunting for May again, but is attacked by the Gibbon. Gaining the upper hand, Gibbon nearly strangles Spidey, but unwilling to become a murderer, he shakes off Kraven’s control and passes out just as Spider-Man manages to throw him off. Spider-Man senses Gibbon was not the true villain, while an enraged Kraven berates himself for not waiting until he was fit enough to fight Spider-Man himself.
Kraven survives being knocked off a cliff by Ka-Zar, slowing his descent by grabbing outgrowing plants. Later, finding Gog’s seemingly dead body, he blames Spider-Man, and swears revenge (after ASM #104, ’72).
