  • Peter Parker returns from Montreal and tries to visit Harry Osborn, who has overdosed on LSD. However, Norman Osborn throws him, Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane out of his house. Peter passes by the Bugle to drop off his pictures, but is promptly evicted by JJJ when discovered he’s coming down with a bug. Meanwhile, Osborn receives a report of his stocks falling and Harry’s worsening condition, causing him to revert to his Green Goblin persona. Blaming Spidey for his troubles, he heads to Peter’s apartment, fi nds Gwen there and kidnaps her. Spidey discovers this and uses his spider-sense to lead him to the Brooklyn Bridge where Gobby waits with Gwen. During their fight, the Goblin knocks Gwen off the bridge with his glider. Spidey catches her with webbing but the whiplash snaps Gwen’s neck, killing her. Spider-Man vows revenge on the Goblin.

Norman Osborn becoming the Green Goblin (in Peter’s thoughts)

The Brooklyn Bridge mistakenly called the George Washington Bridge here; Stan Lee taking credit for this blunder as an editor on Travel Channel’s “Marvel Superheroes Guide to New York City.” (2004) Reprints correct the bridge’s name. Although the Goblin claimed the shock of the fall killed Gwen, Roy Thomas confirmed in ASM #125, ’73 letter column that the whiplash was the official cause of death. Story title not revealed until last page.
