  • Spider-Man spins a web-net between buildings, saving himself. As Peter Parker, he returns to the biology lab and finds Dr. Clifton Shallot cleaning up. At the registration offi ce, Peter learns that lab assistant Christine Murrow, was not only murder victim Gloria Jenkins’ roommate but also her near-double. At the Daily Bugle, Peter learns the real Vulture is still in jail. He then tracks down informant “Mouthpiece” Moylan who steers him to the docks. There, as Peter, he fi nds the Vulture stealing chemicals. Claiming Peter has snooped on him twice, the Vulture drops him into the river. Later, MJ tells Peter she is ready to go to the police. Peter takes her in a cab but the Vulture attacks, crashing it. Peter, as Spidey, rescues MJ, then returns to Shallot’s lab and confronts Christine, revealing that he knows the Vulture is Shallot. The Vulture attacks but Spidey gives him the chemical he was after on the docks, which reverts him to Shallot. Realizing the Vulture’s previous reference to two “snoops” had to include his earlier meeting with Shallot, Spidey deduces the doctor used his bio-chemical mutation device to merge with the real Vulture’s wings then planned to kill Christine to keep her silent, accidentally killing Gloria in her place. Unlike MJ, however, Christine couldn’t overcome her fear. Spidey tells her there isn’t much difference between a murderer and those who stand by and do nothing.

Spidey discovers murder scene outside MJ’s apartment. Peter fails to convince her to go to the police. The Vulture attacks Christine Murrow then drops Spidey from a great height, (ASM #127, ’73).
