Spider-Man wakes up in an abandoned tenement where the waiting Jackal instructs him to come to Shea Stadium at midnight to save Ned’s life. As Spidey arrives at Shea, the Jackal knocks him out, extracting an RNA sample to implant Spidey’s recent memories into a Spider-Clone. Ned is rigged to a bomb that only the real Spidey can defuse. Both thinking they’re real, the two Spideys fight to be the rescuer. Perceiving the dilemma, Gwen overcomes the hypnosis and calls the Jackal a murderer. Shaken by this, Warren saves Ned but is caught in the blast as is the Spider-Clone; both are apparently killed. The next day, Gwen leaves town, and Peter returns home broken-hearted, but finds MJ waiting for him.
Spidey tossed off Brooklyn Bridge, evades police, visits Prof. Warren, defeats Tarantula, ambushed by Jackal (ASM #148, ’75). Warren tricks Serba into cloning Gwen, accidentally killing him while keeping him quiet, creates Jackal persona (for Warren between ASM #122, ’73 & #126, ’73), awakens Gwen clone (between ASM #127, ’73 & #129, ’74), educates her (between ASM #130, ’74 & WoSM #117, ’94).
