  • Mysterio’s depressant takes away Spidey’s powers but he is still determined to learn the truth. As the Burglar frees himself, Peter learns that the killer rented May’s house, then breaks into a TV network to view a program on Dutch Mallone he recalls. When a purse snatcher runs past, Peter stops him and discovers the guard is the same as the one he ignored years before. Returning home, he fi nds the Burglar waiting for him. Peter attacks, but without his powers, the Burglar knocks him out. He awakens in the Acme Warehouse where the Burglar tells him of the hidden treasure; the reason he broke into the Parker home originally. Peter refuses to help him. The Burglar leaves to get someone that will make Peter talk. Peter breaks free and follows, as Spidey, to the nursing home where the Burglar spots and shoots him, leaving him for dead. The Burglar returns to the warehouse with the still-alive May, who had been tied up and hidden in the nursing home basement. There, he finds Peter’s broken restraints and a revived Spidey. The two fi ght on equal footing until the Burglar’s constant taunts about Ben’s death give Spidey the extra strength he needs. When asked why he cares so much, Spidey reveals his identity. Convinced Spidey will kill him for Ben’s murder, the Burglar flees but his weak heart gives out, and he dies. His powers returned, Spidey takes May to the hospital where she tells Peter that silverfish ate Dutch Mallone’s treasure years ago.

Origin of Spider-Man including letting Burglar run past and stopping him at Acme Warehouse (AF #15, ’62). The Burglar meets Dutch Mallone in prison, learning that Mallone lived in May’s house in the 1930s, leaving a hidden treasure before being caught by Eliot Ness. Peter raised from a baby by May and Ben, and letting the Burglar escape. May witnesses the Burglar shoot and kill Ben. Mysterio as Dr. Rinehart fakes May’s death, showing Peter her body (last part ASM #196, ’79).
