Two Serpents leave a recording at Avengers Mansion instructing the team to attend the Serpents’ next public meeting. At the U.N., Gen. Chen condemns America because of the hateful Serpents. Disgusted at Goliath’s apparent allegiance to the Serpents, Bill Foster quits. As Goliath and Wasp attend the meeting, Hawkeye and Black Widow infiltrate the Serpents’ airship. Goliath publicly denounces the Serpents, but a Captain America imposter challenges him and sows suspicion among the audience. The Serpents fight Goliath and Wasp, and the battle is taken to the Serpents’ airship, where the real Cap is freed. The Avengers defeat the Serpents and reveal their leader as Chen, whose goal was to foment dissension and distrust in America.
The credits include the fictitious Irving Forbush (“snake charmer”). Scarlet Witch appears on the cover but is not in the story. Gen. Chen’s successors as Supreme Serpent appear in Av #73, ’70. Hawkeye mentions Brand Echh, a derisive term used by Marvel for its competitors. The blurb for next issue announcing a dramatic change in Goliath prematurely promotes issue #35; the mistake is corrected in issue #34.
