  • After finishing his science homework with Liz, Peter heads home and sews a second Spider-Man costume. The next day Peter is at the Bugle when Jameson is visited by scientist Spencer Smythe who has built a robot to capture Spider-Man. Mischievously, Peter convinces Jameson to hear him out, only to see in a demonstration that the robot is quite dangerous. At school, Peter finds that Flash is jealous of him for spending time with Liz. As Smythe’s robot tracks Spider-Man’s aura, Peter must also avoid Flash and his friends. During the chase, Liz and Betty both visit Aunt May and are startled to meet Mary Jane Watson, who proves to be glamorous. Peter ditches Flash and his friends but must fight the Jameson-operated robot as Spider-Man. When it entraps him in its steel coils, Jameson and Smythe head to the scene. However, with no one at the controls, Spider-Man manages to shut the robot off. As a prank, he leaves his costume inside the coils, knowing he has his replacement suit at home. However, when Peter returns home he sees that Aunt May has found the costume and, thinking he would wear it to parties, confiscated it.

    Smythe’s robots named Spider-Slayers beginning in ASM #58, ’68.
