As Spider-Man swings towards the ESU Chem lab, he passes fellow student Roger Hochberg entering the lab annex, containing a huge scientific library. There, Roger is startled by the appearance of the Red Ghost and his Super-Apes. Roger runs and hides, but Miklho finds him and pulls down a bookcase that rips out some wires, causing a fi re. The alarm attracts Spidey. He enters the building and reaches for a fire extinguisher that turns out to be Igor, the shape-shifting baboon. As the fi re spreads, Spidey grabs Roger and escapes as the fi re department arrives. Across town, the Ghost reveals that he is looking for a rare mathematical treatise to increase his powers. At the Bugle, Peter learns about the Red Ghost from reporter Victor Pauncholio, and heads back to ESU, where he meets Roger and invites him to a dorm party. There, Mia Carrera and her friends play a practical joke on meek, studious Roger that causes him to run away. Angered, Peter tells the jokesters what he thinks of them. Mia realizes Pete is right. That night the Ghost returns to the annex, and grabs the again-studying Roger. Spidey intervenes and the fight ends up in the sports stadium. Roger runs for the police, but the Ghost and his apes escape. The next day, Mia and three girlfriends surround Roger. They’ve heard about how he saved Spidey’s life by getting the police and they want to get to know him better.
