Photographing a football game for the Bugle with reporter Wendy Thornton, Peter runs into his former student, Tony Nesters, whose brother Ray is the New York Mammoths’ quarterback. Ray slightly overthrows his receiver at the gun and the Mammoths lose. Later, he meets the Rose’s men, Johnston and Varley, in the parking lot. They pay him for throwing the game. Meanwhile, Peter visits Aunt May and tells her he’s taking a leave from school, which greatly upsets her. When Ray refuses to throw the upcoming playoff game, the Rose has Tony kidnapped. Peter and Wendy arrive at Ray’s apartment for an interview just as Ray rushes out to save his brother. Ditching Wendy, Spidey tails Ray to a warehouse where he helps take down the Rose’s men and save the brothers, though the Rose escapes. Knowing he’ll otherwise never be free of the Rose, Ray admits to his crimes and quits the team. Wendy wonders how someone could waste their life and future as Ray has, hitting Peter close to home.
