Jason Macendale hires the Foreigner to kill the Hobgoblin. Minutes after contacting his men, Foreigner is informed that the deed is done. Later, at JFK airport, Peter, Robbie, JJJ, Betty, and Marla witness Ned’s coffi n’s arrival from Europe. Guilt-ridden, Peter is sure Spider-Man is somehow responsible. He sees the Hobgoblin observing from his glider. At their weekly chess game, the Kingpin tells Foreigner that his unendorsed assassination of Hobgoblin showed a lack of respect. Foreigner scoffs at the Kingpin who then puts the word out that he has Hobgoblin info for Spider-Man. At Ned’s funeral, Betty has a mental breakdown. Soon after, a raggedy Flash tries to turn himself in to the police who ignore him. At his penthouse, the Rose finds Johnston and Varley dead, both murdered by the Hobgoblin. The Kingpin gives Spidey his Hobgoblin dossier, then kills his henchman Geppi for bugging his offi ce for the Rose. Spidey reads the dossier, discovering that Ned was the Hobgoblin. Kingpin tells him of Foreigner’s involvement and that Macendale, the former Jack O’Lantern, has assumed the Hobgoblin guise. Soon after, the new Hobgoblin confronts Kingpin, demanding the dossier but Kingpin informs him that Spidey has it. Meanwhile, Spidey arrives at Foreigner’s Import office to discover it was a temporary front. There, Hobgoblin attacks him. During their battle, Hobgoblin destroys the dossier and heaves a pumpkin bomb at a wounded Spidey. Flash, arriving on the scene, catches the bomb, throwing it back at Hobgoblin, but getting caught in the blast himself. As Hobby fl ees, Spidey performs CPR on Flash, saving his life. With witnesses seeing Flash and Hobgoblin together, the charge that Flash is Hobby is dropped. At their chess game, Kingpin explodes his elevator with Foreigner inside. The singed assassin promises to return for next week’s match. After contemplating giving up his Spidey identity for weeks, Peter, inspired by Flash, decides to accept his responsibility.
