Lucius Dilby, a toady-like man who is one of Dr. Doom’s scientists, succeeds, after ten years, in creating an interface between magic and science, thereby allowing the possibility of the mystical event, the Bend Sinister, which occurs once every 60,000 years. Doom rewards Dilby by sending him into Dormammu’s dimension. Dormammu grants Dilby a modicum of power that he uses to create a robot creature. In Manhattan, Dr. Strange is studying when a large crate containing a mummy is delivered. When Strange peers at the mummy with the Eye of Agamatto it sheds its bandages to reveal itself as Dilby’s robot creature, which attacks Strange and his servant Wong. Unable to defeat the creature, Strange abandons his body in his Astral form, only to discover that his house is under attack from a hoard of ethereal monstrosities. He sends out a psychic fl are that eventually locates Peter Parker. Spidey hurries to Strange’s home but is attacked by stone gargoyles and some other-worldly creatures. Defeating them, he fi nds Wong, who tells him that Strange sent a four letter telepathic message – CBGB. As Dilby holds Strange captive, Peter arrives at new wave rock club CBGB’s to hear the band Shrapnel, and sees Deb Whitman. The two go to a nearby coffee shop, when they spot CBGB patrons marching down the street, chanting “Bend Sinister.” Pete abandons Deb to follow the crowd as Spidey through Times Square, heading for the Latverian embassy. Spidey spots Dilby and Dr. Strange who is shackled to an Eldritch crystal on the embassy’s roof. As Dilby attempts to bring about the Bend Sinister, his robot attacks Spidey who crashes it into the crystal freeing Strange. Doc banishes Dilby to Dormammu’s dimension before flying off, leaving behind a very confused and irritated Spidey. In Latveria, Dormammu delivers a miniature Dilby trapped inside a smaller version of the gem to Doom, who casually adds the bauble to his collection.
