  • Seeking vengeance against Thor, Loki attempts to lure Thor into battle in Asgard by pitting him against the Hulk. He makes it seem that the Hulk has attacked a train in the American desert. When Rick Jones attempts to contact the Fantastic Four for help, Loki diverts the signal to Dr. Blake’s radio, but Iron Man, Ant-Man and Wasp also intercept the message. The four heroes converge in the Southwest to stop the Hulk. Thor realizes it is a trick by Loki, and heads to Asgard to confront his half-brother. Meanwhile, Iron Man, Ant-Man and Wasp battle the Hulk, who has joined a carnival as a strong man named Mechano. In Asgard, Loki delivers Thor to the trolls as part of his plan, but the Thunder God defeats the trolls by summoning lightning, which they cannot bear. Thor returns with Loki in tow, and breaks up the fight, which has moved to an auto factory. Loki makes himself radioactive, but Ant-Man cleverly traps Loki in a lead-lined tank. Ant-Man suggests he and his four allies form a team, the others agree, and Wasp supplies the group’s name: the Avengers.

Ant-Man changes his identity to Giant-Man in TTA #49, ’63, shortly after this issue. Rick Jones’ Avengers status is clarified in OHMU #1, ’83 as an honorary membership, the team’s first, and he is revealed to have an Avengers ID card in TTA #64/2, ’65. Charlie Gaston’s surname is revealed in Av:O #1, ’10. The only Teen Brigade member named in this issue is Willie; Sam is named in Av:O #1, ’10.
