Via a video-call, the Pentagon alerts the Avengers to the arrival of a UFO in Virginia and its defeat of troops sent to investigate. Rushing to the scene, the Avengers find the futuristic conqueror Kang, who toys with them until the US Undersecretary of the Defense Department Paul Ignatius arrives and demands Kang explain himself. Kang relates his origins and proclaims himself the new ruler of the 20th century. Giant-Man grabs Kang, restarting the battle, but Kang quickly incapacitates most of the Avengers using his continual paralysis beam, overlooking Wasp and Rick Jones. While the UN swiftly rejects Kang’s ultimatum to surrender to him, Rick gathers together the Teen Brigade. Feigning allegiance to Kang to gain access to his ship, they search for the captive Avengers, soon releasing Thor, who frees the other Avengers. The regrouped Avengers then confront Kang once again, and the Wasp arrives, having brought a Power Ray designed by Iron Man, which Giant-Man uses to dissolve the mechanical components of Kang’s armor. Kang unleashes a neutrino missile but Iron Man deflects it harmlessly into the air, and when he unleashes radiation from a projector hidden in his mask, Thor reflects it back, forcing Kang to flee back inside his ship and depart.
Paul Ignatius’ name is revealed in OMIAv #1, ’94.
