After ants warn him of an imminent disaster, Giant-Man assembles the Avengers, suggesting the insects’ warning might indicate a subterranean menace such as the Mole Man. The other Avengers are all skeptical of the warning’s urgency given its source, and an irritated Thor mocks Giant-Man before departing. Insulted, Giant-Man insists he will proceed alone. Investigating, he soon discovers the Mole Man is alive and using an atomic gyroscope to speed up Earth’s rotation gradually so he can devastate the surface world and conquer it, but Mole Man and his Subterraneans capture Giant-Man before he can warn anyone. Later, as tremors are felt worldwide because of Mole Man’s device, the other Avengers realize their mistake and seek out Giant-Man, which leads them to Mole Man. After fighting off a squad of Mole Man’s troops and thwarting an attempted robbery by Monk Keefer and other criminals, the Avengers dig their way down to the Mole Man’s realm, where they fight the Mole Man, his Subterraneans and his new super-criminal ally, the Red Ghost. Mole Man and Red Ghost escape due to the latter’s intangibility power, but Giant-Man is rescued and the atomic gyroscope is destroyed, saving the world.
