The Avengers rush the gravely wounded Wasp to a hospital, where they are told only the specialist Dr. Svenson can save her. Thor forcibly recruits what seems to be a reluctant Svenson, but a frantic Giant-Man unmasks “Svenson” as a Kallusian alien who admits his people are holding the real Svenson hostage; the alien then dies gasping for air. After a worldwide search, the Avengers find the Kallusians’ hidden Arctic city, where the aliens capture the Avengers and explain how Svenson has agreed to make breathing masks for them so long as the aliens do no harm to Earth. The Avengers break free and battle the Kallu until Svenson breaks up the fight; however, when the Kallu learn that their Yirbek enemies have traced them to Earth, they are prepared to make a final stand there until the Avengers declare that the Kallu must leave Earth for their battle or face the Avengers as well as the Yirbek. The Kallu reluctantly agree, teleporting the Avengers and Svenson to New York before they depart Earth. While Uatu the Watcher remarks on how Wasp’s injury saved the world by restricting the final Kallu-Yirbek clash to space, Svenson operates and saves the Wasp’s life.
The outnumbered and exhausted Kallusians flee their distant galaxy after a long interplanetary war and go into hiding on Earth, where the atmosphere is gradually killing them until they abduct respiratory expert Dr. Svenson (p).
This story is the Teen Brigade’s last on-panel appearance in the series. The letters page announces that Stan Lee wrote six consecutive pages of this issue while Larry Lieber and Larry Ivie (alias Paul Laiken) wrote the rest, challenging readers to guess who wrote which pages in exchange for a no-prize, but the answer was never revealed. The name of the hospital to which Wasp is taken is revealed in Av #275, ’87.
