As Captain America falls from the skyscraper, Quicksilver slows his descent with a superspeed-generated vortex, Hawkeye severs Cap’s bonds with an arrow, and Scarlet Witch hexes a girder beneath him to land on. With Cap safe, the Avengers battle Swordsman until the villain is mysteriously transported away, much to the confusion of all parties. The Avengers return to their Mansion as the Swordsman rematerializes before the Mandarin, who wants to use Swordsman to infiltrate the Avengers. Initially skeptical, Swordsman eventually agrees, and the Mandarin upgrades his sword with in-built weapons. As Hawkeye and Captain America argue over Avengers leadership, the Mandarin uses his Matter-Recreater to project an image of Iron Man to the Avengers that vouches for the Swordsman, claiming that their initial fight was a misunderstanding caused by the Swordsman trying to prove himself. Returning to the mansion, Swordsman joins the team despite their distrust; after a few days their guard slips, allowing him to plant a bomb. When Mandarin appears before the Swordsman and tells him he is going to detonate the bomb, Swordsman has second thoughts, feeling dishonored by stooping to assassination. He tries to disarm the bomb, but is discovered by the Avengers, who assume he has betrayed the team, and a fight ensues. The Swordsman escapes with the bomb and it detonates outside, leaving the Avengers to wonder if the Swordman perished in the explosion. Having safely made it onto a rooftop, the Swordsman regrets having betrayed the team and the Mandarin vows to destroy the Swordsman.
