Dr. Doom targets the Avengers, intent on using them as bait to trap the Fantastic Four. The Avengers bicker as a moody Hawkeye, jealous of Cap’s authority, repeatedly offends his teammates despite himself. Doom sends the team a letter supposedly from a long-lost aunt of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, who previously thought they had no living relatives. The Avengers come to Latveria to visit this aunt, but are thrown in jail. When they escape, Doom seals the entire country inside a giant anti-missile dome so that the Avengers cannot leave. The populace, loyal to Doom, quickly turns against the Avengers, who confront Doom in his castle and battle him until Doom retreats after Hawkeye damages his armor. The Avengers go into hiding while a peasant couple beg Doom to open the dome so their disabled son can get urgently needed medical treatment, but Doom insists the dome will remain sealed until the Avengers are neutralized. The Fantastic Four try to come to the Avengers’ aid, but US officials forbid them to get involved for diplomatic reasons. Invading Doom’s castle again, the Avengers overpower him long enough to open the dome and sabotage its controls, enabling them to flee the country before Doom can raise the dome again.
This is actually Doom’s 2nd known battle with the Avengers, since he fought the team’s founders in Av # 1½, ’99. This issue includes ads for the Avengers T-Shirt and other Marvel products. Letter writer Jim Ruszka suggests “Mark Hawk” as a civilian name for Hawkeye, ironically close to the secret identity of his future partner Two-Gun Kid (Matt Hawk, which is actually mentioned jokingly as another possible Hawkeye name in the reply to Jim’s letter).
