The Avengers meet Captain America at Dr. Doom’s Adirondack castle to use his time platform, hoping to verify whether Cap’s partner Bucky really died in 1945. After showing Wasp how to operate the controls, Cap and the Avengers travel to 1945 as intangible ghosts, where they witness that era’s Captain America and Bucky interrupt Baron Zemo’s attempt to steal an experimental drone plane from the Allies. Cap and Bucky fight Zemo’s Humanoid until Bucky is knocked out and Zemo shoots the distracted Cap from behind. The two unconscious heroes are changed into their army uniforms and tied to the drone plane. Meanwhile in the present, Wasp falls asleep, accidentally hitting a button that makes the time-travelers materialize fully and become visible. The modern-day Captain America attacks Zemo who activates a second Humanoid, which battles the Avengers. Nearby Allied soldiers investigate the ruckus, but Goliath saves them from the Humanoid. The Avengers begin to dissipate so Cap throws his shield to free his past self, who in turn frees Bucky as Zemo launches the drone plane. Cap and Bucky chase the plane, which explodes when Bucky tries to defuse it. As the Avengers rematerialize in the present, Zemo disintegrates his Humanoids and escapes. At Castle Doom, Cap realizes that Bucky was destined to die...
When the current era’s Avengers interfere in the past they create a divergent timeline, sparing Cap the sight of his & Bucky’s torture atZemo’s hands (as seen in Cap #4, ’05 fb). Unknown at this time, Bucky survived, as is revealed in Cap #8, ’05. Letters page includes LOC from future comics writer Peter Sanderson.
