  • Black Panther, Hawkeye and Vision narrowly avoid a crash landing when Panther’s airship malfunctions, but Hawkeye’s pride is hurt since a broken bowstring stopped him from using his archery skills to help his teammates prevent the crash. Yellowjacket and Wasp return from their honeymoon, with the former announcing he is giving up his Goliath identity and its growth powers, despite Wasp having made him a new Goliath costume. He is about to dispose of his newly improved growth serum when the team receives a fake transmission supposedly from Nick Fury claiming the Black Widow has gone missing in the Caribbean. The group flies off to investigate, leaving Widow’s boyfriend Hawkeye behind since he is too emotionally involved. Black Widow then sends him a message indicating she is actually a prisoner somewhere in New York. Correctly deducing she is on Coney Island, Hawkeye adopts Pym’s discarded costume and growth serum and comes to the rescue as the new Goliath. Fearing arrest, the Widow’s captors—Egghead, Mad Thinker and Puppet Master—flee while leaving the Widow in a giant android’s clutches to keep Goliath busy. Goliath outfights the android despite its greater power and rescues the Widow.

Captain America, Iron Man and Thor appear on the cover of this issue but do not appear in this story. Hawkeye becoming Goliath marks the 1st instance (but not the last) of an Avenger adopting an identity previously used by another Avenger. Hawkeye is only the 2nd Avenger to change his costumed identity, the 1st being Hank Pym, but others will follow.
