Captain America emerges from the shadows and joins the Vision in subduing the Grim Reaper. They find the secret passage to Hydra’s base and free their fellow Avengers. The heroes encounter the Reaper, the Space Phantom and a horde of Hydra agents, but when the Phantom tries to kill the Vision, the Reaper stops him. The Space Phantom subdues the Reaper and most of the Avengers and forces the Vision to surrender by threatening to kill the Reaper. The Phantom pursues the missing Scarlet Witch to Avengers Mansion, where the villain overcomes Jarvis and Rick Jones. After the Phantom gathers his captives, Rick Jones tricks him into assuming his form, thus unwittingly summoning Captain Mar-Vell from the Negative Zone and casting the villain into Limbo. The heroes defeat Hydra and the Reaper surrenders. Back at the mansion the Avengers find Thor has returned, and Scarlet Witch reveals she is worried about the missing Pietro. No longer denying he can feel emotions after feeling compelled to protect the Reaper because they might once have been brothers, the Vision offers her a shoulder to cry on, and they embrace.
The Space Phantom executes his master plan (Av #106-107, ’72-’73). Hiding behind the Grim Reaper, Captain America signals the Vision to agree to the villain’s invitation to join him.
