Jealous of Vision’s new romance with Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye loses himself in intensive training, watched by a worried Thor. Meanwhile, in California, a nine-foot-tall man catches a flight to New York, literally, by physically restraining an airliner as it tries to take off. He avoids arrest because he is the airline’s owner, celebrity tycoon Imus Champion. Back in Manhattan, Vision and Wanda revel in their newfound love. Iron Man is supportive, but an envious Hawkeye quarrels with them and departs. Imus Champion offers him a job as an archery tutor. Hawkeye accepts, wanting a challenge and a distraction. Archery is the only sport Champion has never mastered, so he trains with Hawkeye for weeks, becoming an expert archer. To keep the Avengers away, Champion forges a letter to them from Hawkeye claiming he needs time away to “cool off.” Declaring himself a master of all skills, Champion decides to demonstrate his superiority by detonating a series of bombs that will sink California into the sea so he can legally salvage rare nerve gas from a sunken ship 11.4 miles off the coast. When Hawkeye opposes this, Champion subdues him and ties him to one of the bombs, which he intends to trigger with an arrow. Having belatedly seen through Champion’s forgery, the Avengers intervene, battling Champion and his henchmen, though it is a freed Hawkeye whose incredible marksmanship prevents the bomb’s detonation and captures Champion. Thor praises Hawkeye’s skill, but Hawkeye announces he is quitting the team to pursue a solo career.
Captain America appears on the cover, but not in the story. This is Hawkeye’s first long-term resignation from the team, after what had been the longest continuous service of any member up to this time. Hawkeye resumes his traditional costume design as of this issue.
