  • Black Panther, Thor, and Vision return to Avengers Mansion with Daredevil and Black Widow, whom they enlisted in San Francisco. A newspaper article prompts the heroes to suspect that Magneto’s next move will be at an Atomic Energy Commission meeting. Sure enough, Magneto and the enthralled Captain America, Iron Man, Scarlet Witch, Cyclops, Iceman, and Marvel Girl storm the meeting and abduct the commissioners. Black Panther, Thor, Daredevil, and Black Widow fail to stop Magneto and his prisoners from getting away, then they notice that the Vision is missing. The quartet locates Magneto’s base, where Magneto demands the commissioners tell him how to access the United States’ atomic energy so he can destroy or mutate humanity. The heroes’ battle with the villain and his thralls resumes. When Magneto gains the upper hand, Piper, controlled by the near-intangible Vision, strikes him down. As the freed X-Men ponder the Angel’s disappearance, Cap offers Avengers membership to Daredevil, who declines, and Black Widow, who surprisingly accepts.

Daredevil fights Hawkeye (DD #99, ’73). Magneto leads the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants (X #4, ’64). Magneto tricks the Angel into wearing a costume he devised (X #63, ’69, see NOTE). Magneto subdues the Angel, uses the hero’s specially designed costume to renew his own power and defeats the X-Men.

Black Widow joins the Avengers. One panel of this issue, reprinted from X #63, ’69, was penciled by Neal Adams and inked by Tom Palmer. This issue reveals that Magneto can control people’s minds by manipulating the iron content in their blood and that the Vision can control a person by being nearly intangible in his body. Magneto refers to Captain America’s new super-strength, which Cap acquired in Cap #159, ’73. The mysterious disappearance of the Angel in this issue is revealed as a kidnapping by the Secret Empire in Cap #174, ’74. The Black Panther paraphrases lyrics to the song, “Ballin’ the Jack.”
