  • Libra surrenders to the police, parting amicably with Mantis. The Avengers congratulate a returning Captain America for clearing his name in the Secret Empire case, but that adventure has left him disillusioned and inclined to rethink his life. As Mantis departs to attend Swordsman’s release from the hospital, Lou-Ann Savannah arrives seeking help in Captain Marvel’s struggle with Thanos. The Avengers aid Captain Marvel against Thanos and his pawns in a series of battles, during which Iron Man disappears alongside Captain Marvel and their allies Drax and Moondragon. Mantis and the remaining Avengers, including a recovered Swordsman, fly into space to engage a massive space fleet sent by Thanos to conquer Earth. The mission is complicated by tension between the Swordsman-Mantis and Vision-Witch couples, since a jealous Swordsman accuses Vision of coveting Mantis and the Scarlet Witch seems to believe the accusation, but the quartet nevertheless plays a key role in destroying a universal translator that enables Thanos’ troops to communicate with each other. Without it, Thanos’ fleet plunges into disarray and in-fighting, destroying itself. The Avengers return to Earth, where some of them proclaim victory while others worry that Thanos is not defeated yet.

Mantis helps the Avengers defeat the Star-Stalker and Vision kills the alien (Av #124, ’74).

This issue’s story intersects with the events of CM #27-33, ’73-74, during which the Avengers team up with Captain Marvel and others against the forces of Thanos, recapping some of the events in those issues while serving as a simultaneous alternate perspective to those events. The story concludes in CM #33.
