Mind-controlled by Attuma’s slave collars, the Avengers attack Hydrobase, which they discover is the home of Dr. Doom rather than their intended target, Sub-Mariner. Assisted by Namorita, Tamara Rahn and Hydrobase’s amphibian inhabitants, Doom defeats and imprisons the Avengers. Beast, Wonder Man and Whizzer track Attuma and his forces to an oceanographic research facility they are raiding. When Sub-Mariner arrives, Attuma tricks him into fighting the three heroes. Beast spies Attuma stealing an experimental cell stimulator and follows the warlord to his undersea craft. On Hydrobase, Vision breaks free of his bonds and slave collar, but instead of freeing his teammates, he approaches Dr. Doom and suggests an alliance.
Vision is delivered to Attuma and the Avengers battle Tyrak (Av #154, ’76). Attuma sends the mind-controlled Avengers to Hydrobase to attack Sub-Mariner but the heroes find Dr. Doom there instead (SVTU #9, ’76). Simon Williams becomes Wonder Man, fights the Avengers and dies (Av #9, ’64).
