  • As five Avengers depart the Mansion – Cap, Thor, Wasp, Yellowjacket and Iron Man, with the latter carrying Whizzer back to hospital to rest his ailing heart – the remaining Avengers prepare to relax, only to be attacked by the Grim Reaper and swiftly overpowered. When they awaken, Grim Reaper places Wonder Man and Vision on trial, to determine which one is truly his brother reborn, with Black Panther appointed defending counsel. Vision recounts his origins and makes no denial that he is an artificial being, though the Panther cites Vision’s marriage as evidence that he is his own being. After hearing Wonder Man recount his origin, Grim Reaper seems convinced that Wonder Man is the true Simon Williams, but the Black Panther reveals that Wonder Man is no longer human. Surprised that the Panther had deduced his current status, Wonder Man reveals his eyes, which glow with red energy. Forcing the Grim Reaper to realize that he could never have Simon Williams back the way he originally was, Vision notes that if Wonder Man has stepped beyond humanity, perhaps he and the Vision are the true brothers. Enraged, the Reaper renders the Avengers unconscious once more, and is about to execute the Vision when Wonder Man, unaffected by Reaper’s induction bands, attacks. They battle until the Reaper destroys his scythe on Wonder Man’s skin, and Wonder Man knocks the Reaper out. Waking the Avengers, he asks them to leave him alone with the Reaper for a while.

Ultron brings the Vision to life (Av #58, ’68). He later learns he was once the Human Torch (Av #134, ’75). Grim Reaper offers to use the Space Phantom’s technology to give Vision Captain America’s body. Cap secretly signals Vision to play along with the Reaper. The Vision blocks a Hydra assassin’s attempt to shoot the Reaper (Av #108, ’73). Immortus presides over the marriage of Mantis to the Eldest Cotati and Vision to Scarlet Witch (GSAv #4, ’75). Simon Williams is empowered as Wonder Man and seemingly dies while saving the Avengers (Av #9, ’64). The Avengers battle the Grim Reaper for the first time (Av #52, ’68). Grim Reaper seeks the Vision’s aid against the Avengers, and shows him Wonder Man’s preserved “corpse” (Av #107, ’73). A “zuvembie” Wonder Man bursts out of a crate in front of Avengers Mansion (Av #151, ’76). Black Talon uses Wonder Man as a “zuvembie” slave (Av #152, ’76). By the time he helps fight Living Laser and Nuklo Wonder Man has regained his full faculties (Av Ann #6, ’76).

An uncredited Gaspar Saldino did p1’s letters.
