Learning Aunt May is hospitalized, Spider-Man must elude the police and climb through an air shaft to visit her. Seeing Peter, May immediately improves. Discovering he is listed as a missing person, Peter goes to the police where he meets Captain Stacy for the first time. He tells the cops that Spider-Man had amnesia and kidnapped him thinking he was an enemy since he was following on a picture-taking assignment but released him when his memory returned. A report comes in that more dangerous mobsters have unaccountably been released on bail. Captain Stacy invites Peter home and shows him his research on Spider-Man until Gwen arrives, ecstatically kisses Pete and takes him to see Harry at the Coffee Bean. MJ is not there, having gotten a job dancing and picture taking at the Gloom Room A-Go-Go. Unbeknownst to her, the Brainwasher runs the disco and the pictures hypnotize customers to return later when Dr. Winkler brainwashes them. Previous brainwashings have prompted the unaccountable bail releases. The Brainwasher plans to take over the city by inviting and brainwashing all top officials. Peter, Gwen, and Harry attend MJ’s opening night. Captain Stacy and other invited officials are also there. After dancing, MJ snaps Stacy and a councilman's picture. Dazed, Stacy is led to Dr. Winkler. Peter investigates as Spider-Man, fighting the Brainwasher's men until finding Stacy under Winkler's machine. The Brainwasher intervenes, revealing himself as the Kingpin.
