Still angry over being dropped from the team, Hawkeye departs in a bitter mood. A few days later, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch arrive in Transia with Django Maximoff, seeking the truth about their parentage and their conflicting childhood memories. That night, the mage Modred appears in Wanda’s room, offering to help with her quest; he transports her to Wundagore Mountain and the High Evolutionary’s abandoned and ruined citadel, where an altar and arcane book await, but then strikes her down from behind. The next morning, Pietro discovers Wanda’s absence; after a fruitless search of the village, a young girl tells him she saw lights fly from the inn to the mountain during the night. Seeing lights atop the mountain, Pietro races up it, but strikes an energy barrier, knocking him unconscious and down the side of the peak. He awakens to find his wounds bandaged in the cottage of the humanoid cow, Bova, who tells the shocked Pietro that she brought him into the world.
Pietro recalls he and his sister being raised by a gypsy couple until villagers set fire to the camp, forcing the children to flee (1). Bob and Madeline Frank arrive at Wundagore, where Madeline dies in childbirth. The midwife, Bova, presents Bob with twin children, Pietro and Wanda (2). When Wanda’s powers ebb, she, Quicksilver, and the Toad visit Transia seeking to restore them (Av #75, ’70).
Melissa’s surname is given in Av #197, ’80. As of this issue, each cover’s top left corner box features Avengers headshots drawn by John Byrne. While these primarily showcase the active roster, Byrne also drew headshots for non-active members (for instance, headshots of Hawkeye and Scarlet Witch seen in this issue’s letters page). In various combinations and with occasional non-Byrne alterations/additions, Byrne’s headshots would be the primary or sole cover corner box illustration in Av #185-220, 222-224, 226-261, 299-346, 348-349 & 351-359, ’79-’85 & ’89-’93; Av Ann #10 & 12-14, ’81 & ’83-’85; WCA #1-4, ’84; WCA #1-47, ’85-’89; AWC #48-58 & 60-74, ’89-’91; and AvS #22-24 & 27-29, ’89-’90. His compiled, revised and expanded headshots would also illustrate Avengers rosters printed in the first two editions of OHMU and Av #300, ’89.
