  • Having gone for a drink after their disastrous double-date, an inebriated Wonder Man and Beast are stunned to witness Red Ronin’s giant form wading down the Hudson River. Moments later, having been alerted by SHIELD, the other Avengers arrive and pick them up. An attempt to halt the robot’s progress leaves Wonder Man unconscious, but Jocasta and Beast manage to climb inside the robot’s leg. SHIELD’s Behemoth aircraft arrives and joins the attack, while Wasp and Yellowjacket enter Ronin’s control room through his eye holes, confronting the controller, Earl Cowan, who explains he is only trying to “kill the fear” before expelling them with an exhaust fan. In New Jersey a distressed Ms. Marvel, who has gone from three to six months pregnant overnight, struggles to remain calm, and admits to the Scarlet Witch that she is scared. As Ronin reaches Long Island Sound, Iron Man channels his armor’s energies through the Behemoth, stunning the robot but also bringing down the SHIELD vessel. However, though Cowan is knocked unconscious, Ronin swiftly recovers and sets off to obey Cowan’s last order, “Destroy.” At Cross Technological Enterprises, security chief Hawkeye investigates an alarm and finds himself face-to-foot with the giant robot.

As a child Earl Cowan watched his parents spend their last pennies building a fall-out shelter, and watched news of overseas “police actions,” race riots and rising crime, and became obsessed with realising that the world was ruled by fear.

Red Ronin is misspelled as “Red Ronan” on cover.
