  • After spending the day cleaning the mansion in the wake of the damage caused by recent temporal disruptions, the Avengers go their separate ways. Receiving a message from Stark International that Tony Stark is needed, Iron Man heads back to his office to discover that someone has stolen components from the Chemical Research Division. Meanwhile, Beast visits Wonder Man at work as “Mr. Muscles” on the set of the “Uncle Elmer” children’s show. Elmer has Wonder Man spin some of the children round on a “Whirl-a-round” and try to snatch rings from him to win prizes, but when one of the children yanks off Uncle Elmer’s toupee instead, the angry entertainer fires Wonder Man. Later that night, at the Pym household, a robot breaks into Hank’s laboratory, stealing chemical components. With Hank gone on a business trip, Jan attempts to stop the robot alone, but is seemingly disintegrated by the foe. Back at Stark International, Tony has figured out the thief’s identity and suspects he knows who has the resins; believing the entire world is at risk, he has built a mysterious gadget that might be their only hope of survival, but even if it works, it might cost Tony his life…at the hands of a friend.

The story is based in part on “This Evil Undying,” a short story by Jim Shooter published in Marvel Pocket Novel #9 from 1979
