Shorthanded after Tigra’s resignation and Yellowjacket’s expulsion, active Avengers Captain America, Iron Man, Thor and Wasp decide they need new recruits, and agree to nominate candidates at their next team meeting. Inspired by advice from Jarvis and a magazine cover, Thor seeks out Spider-Man, captures a trio of pawnshop robbers Spidey was pursuing, and offers Spider-Man membership. Spider-Man says he’s not much of a joiner, but adds that he’s fl attered and he’ll consider it. Cap and Iron Man invite Hawkeye to rejoin the Avengers. He seems reluctant at fi rst, still resenting how he was forced off the active Avengers roster and boasting about how rewarding his new CTE job is, but he quickly changes his mind and accepts their offer. Wanting more female Avengers, Wasp hosts a dinner party at her Cresskill home for prospective members Black Widow, Dazzler, Invisible Girl, She-Hulk & Spider-Woman. Revenge-seeking minor Avengers foe Fabian Stankowicz the Mechano-Marauder attacks, but the women fi ght him off easily while most of them decline Wasp’s membership offer and depart. After Wasp and She-Hulk fi nally subdue Fabian, Hawkeye and She-Hulk are offi cially approved by federal offi cials as the newest Avengers days later. The reinstated Hawkeye is heading to Avengers Mansion when a pink Cadillac cuts off his cab. Hawkeye responds with an arrow that burns out the pink car’s electrical system, but is surprised when a green woman upends his cab and carries away her disabled Cadillac. Arriving at the mansion later, Hawkeye is unpleasantly surprised to learn his green attacker is also the newest Avenger, She-Hulk.
Thor recalls Moondragon coercing heroes into attending an Avengers membership drive (Av #211, ’81) and more recently forcing him to battle his teammates on Ba-Bani (Av #220, ’82).
The issue’s front cover is depicted inside as the cover of Time Magazine; however, at this time Rom the Spaceknight was believed to be a murdering robot, making it unlikely anyone would speculate about him joining the Avengers. Of the 15 potential recruits pictured on this cover, only 2 (Hawkeye & Hulk) had previously been Avengers; only one of the new faces (She-Hulk) joins the team in this issue; and 8 heroes – Daredevil, Power Man, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Invisible Girl (as Invisible Woman), Ant-Man, Dr. Strange & Spider Woman -- have since joined. Dazzler, Rom, Black Bolt and Silver Surfer remain non-members at this writing, though all except Rom and Black Bolt have been offered membership at least once.
