The Avengers rescue a derailed subway train’s passengers and prevent the collapse of a building undermined by the accident. Iron Man notices how upbeat Wasp seems despite her recent divorce, and how beautiful she is. As reporters swarm Wasp, Captain America complains about relentless media interest in Wasp’s jailed ex-husband Hank Pym. Meanwhile, Ant-Man visits Pym in prison and offers to free him so they can team up to clear his name, but Pym angrily refuses, determined to prove his innocence legally. As Tony Stark, Iron Man starts dating the Wasp, despite her being unaware of Tony’s double identity. Pym’s foe Egghead revels in media coverage of this romance, but Captain America confronts Tony privately, condemning the affair as a betrayal of their old friend Pym and pressuring Stark to tell Jan he is Iron Man. The next Avengers meeting becomes tense when the subject of Pym comes up. Afterward, Thor speaks privately with Iron Man, approving of his romance with Wasp but saying Tony needs to tell Jan he is Iron Man. When Tony finally does so that evening, Jan breaks up with him, unwilling to date one of Pym’s friends. In prison, Pym grimly follows the news of the romance ending.
Scott Lang steals Hank Pym’s Ant-Man suit (MPr #47, ’79). Pym, as Yellowjacket, allows Lang to keep the suit with his blessing (MPr #48, ’79).
This issue marks the 1st Avengers appearance of Jim Rhodes, later an Avenger as Iron Man and War Machine.
