Hawkeye moves back into Avengers Mansion with his new bride Mockingbird and introduces her to the Vision. When Wonder Man calls looking for Avengers to join him as guests on David Letterman’s late night talk show to boost his acting career, all members are absent except for Hawkeye and the still immobilized Vision, who recruits reservists Black Panther, Beast and Black Widow to appear on the show with Wonder Man and Hawkeye. Warped genius Fabian Stankowicz also attends, seeking public revenge for his previous defeats at the Avengers’ hands. During the show, Beast surprises everyone by announcing he is resigning his Avengers membership to concentrate on his new Defenders group, prompting Letterman to stray from his list of pre-planned questions, confusing the newly near-deaf Hawkeye. Fabian eventually activates machines that attack the Avengers while he boasts about his genius to Letterman. The host plays along, then bludgeons Fabian with an oversize prop and confi scates the villain’s personal force fi eld. While the Avengers fi nally wreck Fabian’s attacking machines, Stankowicz flees but is captured by Mockingbird and arrested. Later that night, the show’s broadcast is pre empted by news coverage of a major chemical fire, so Wonder Man leads his fellow Avengers into action in hopes of ending the crisis quickly enough for their Letterman appearance to air unedited in at least one time zone.
