The Avengers deal with negative publicity and logistical problems stemming from the FAA’s decision to ban Avengers Quinjets from launching or landing inside New York City. While the Avengers try in vain to track the cosmic menace Beyonder and Captain Marvel wonders if she should share her secret identity with her teammates, hundreds of letters arrive offering new facilities to house the Avengers or their Quinjets. The only potentially viable offer comes from oceanographic researchers Diane and Walter Newell (alias sometime super hero Stingray), who wish to lease the Avengers aircraft hangar space on their high-tech artifi cial island Hydrobase. Elsewhere, criminal scientists Shinski and Zota free their Enclave partner Morlak from prison and examine Shinski’s mysterious new discovery. Visiting Hydrobase the Avengers tour the facility and encounter the Newells’ close friend Namor the Sub-Mariner, an infamous past ally and adversary of the Avengers. Noticing how melancholy Namor is since his recent loss of the Atlantean throne, a disgusted Hercules goads Namor into a violent brawl, a “gift of battle” meant to reawaken Namor’s fighting spirit. After the other Avengers break up the fight and Hercules explains himself, an amused Namor treats the Newells and the Avengers to a seafood feast, then accepts an offer of Avengers membership from his old friend Captain America.
