Storm and Colossus join the Avengers, moments before the Avengers are slain by a nuclear bomb that devastates Manhattan. Gloating at his triumph, the bomber, Kang, is suddenly transported elsewhere, where three shadowed fi gures accuse him of idiocy, as his bomb triggered a nuclear war, destroying the world he planned to rule; berating him for not realizing his time travels are creating divergent realities and alternate Kangs, they show him another timeline where his plot failed, ending in his own death. Kang’s accusers then reveal themselves to be Kangs working to eradicate their “lesser” counterparts, and kill him. The trio return to their own timelines, but moments later one reappears, suspecting the group’s cloaked leader is hiding something; however, the cloaked Kang is waiting for his “more adventurous” counterpart, and kills him too, telling his lover Ravonna that there is now only one more divergent Kang to eliminate. On Earth-616 Wasp is checking on Hercules and Black Knight’s progress digging a new underground access tunnel when the trio is whisked away to a misty realm, where they encounter an entranced Hulk; when he disappears to be replaced by Giant-Man and then Iron Man in his original armor, Wasp realizes they are in Limbo, and the new arrivals are the Avengers from years ago, displaced from Earth by the shape-stealing Space Phantom. A robot Kang appears, admitting to their kidnap and challenging them to fight; watching from afar, the cloaked Kang tells Ravonna he plans to pit his last counterpart against the Avengers, weakening him enough to be slain.
The Avengers fight Space Phantom (Av #2, ’63).
