Angry upon learning that Namor has undertaken a dangerous solo mission, Wasp quarrels with a condescending Hercules regarding his support of Namor’s rogue quest. Increasingly contemptuous of Wasp’s authority, Hercules storms out, but his mood improves after he rights an overturned truck and its driver offers to buy him a drink. Wasp also cheers up when her sometime-boyfriend, the elite supermercenary Paladin, pays a surprise visit to celebrate his apprehending a jewel thief. Meanwhile, Captain Marvel visits FBI agent Freeman, who updates her on the recent escapes of Grey Gargoyle, Moonstone, Mr. Hyde & Whirlwind, and asks Marvel out to dinner, which she happily accepts. Back at Avengers Mansion, Black Knight runs tests on his sword and later helps Captain Marvel add a new energy form to her repertoire by sending her to the Sun to replicate neutrinos. Meanwhile Paladin and Wasp head to jail to question Wasp’s recently arrested foe Yellowjacket, who breaks out with Grey Gargoyle and Screaming Mimi’s aid. Overtaking the criminal trio, Wasp captures the Gargoyle and Mimi with the aid of Paladin and Black Knight, the only Avenger able to respond to Wasp’s call in time, but Yellowjacket escapes, and a jealous Black Knight notes the Paladin-Wasp romantic chemistry. Days later, Namor reluctantly calls his fellow Avengers for their aid against Attuma.
Byrrah and Namor depart to rescue Namor’s lover Marrina from Atlantis’ new ruler, Attuma (Av #270, ’86).
On p17, panel 5, the Gargoyle’s victims are mistakenly colored flesh pink rather than stone gray, while on p20, panels 3-5 the Grey Gargoyle’s body should be flesh-colored since Black Knight’s sword turns the Gargoyle back into human form; these mistakes were corrected when Av #277, ’87 reprinted those panels, and in later collected editions of this Masters storyline.
