In prison, the Kingpin, vowing to escape and reclaim the tablet, slowly works the bars loose. Meanwhile, Spider-Man, wanted by the law, wonders where to store the tablet. A policeman shoots at him, declaring he can’t escape the law forever. Returning home, Spidey puts the tablet in his closet, then tosses and turns all night. At ESU the next day, Gwen confronts him, accusing him of being a coward. Elsewhere on campus, Dean Corliss tells the protest leaders he was always for low-rent dorms as they wished but had to convince the trustees. He recommends amnesty for the students. Meanwhile, the Kingpin escapes. Spidey decides to have the tablet deciphered and takes it to an archeologist’s studio, but the police are waiting for him. Overhearing that the Kingpin has escaped, Spider-Man furiously attacks any underworld hoods for information. The Kingpin sets up a phony hijacking as an ambush, attracting Spider-Man. The two battle on the street until J. Jonah Jameson and Ned Leeds interrupt in the Bugle radio patrol car. Another car, driven by a mysterious woman, picks up the Kingpin. Frustrated that Jameson’s arrival has aided the Kingpin’s escape, Spider-Man threatens the publisher, scaring him into an apparent heart attack. Spider-Man fears he has caused Jameson’s death.
