Unable to fight the Prowler with J. Jonah Jameson present, Peter pretends to slip, propelling himself out the window. He uses his powers to safely descend to the street and switches to Spider-Man. The distraught Prowler can’t understand what made Peter fall as Jameson accuses him of murder. The Prowler clambers out the window and heads for the roof, where Spidey grabs him. Knowing he can never explain, the Prowler fi ghts back. Spidey apparently defeats him but the Prowler blasts him with a gas pellet from his anklet and escapes. Peter returns to the Bugle and tells Robbie and Jameson that Spidey caught him and returned him to safety. At home, Hobie agonizes over Peter’s “death” and decides to clear himself by capturing Spidey. At ESU the next day Pete spurns Gwen, admitting that he saw her with Flash. He doesn’t wait for an explanation. That night Spidey prepares for the Prowler by installing a gas fi lter in his mask. He then buys camera film by sneaking into a pharmacy and leaving money in a web for the druggist. Soon after he fi nds the Prowler robbing the Smith Brothers Diamond Company. Having set the burglary up to ambush Spidey, Hobie quickly realizes he is outclassed and fl ees. However, Spidey snags him with webbing, clogs his pellet shooters, and unmasks him. Discovering the Prowler is no older than he is, Spidey listens to Hobie’s story and decides to release him since no one was hurt, and nothing was stolen. Spidey considers Hobie the lucky one. They were both on a “rocket to nowhere” but Hobie has a chance to get off.
