  • Finding a shadowy figure standing over Vision, Quicksilver, and Scarlet Witch, Masque only evades capture with Hawkeye’s timely aid. The figure departs, leaving the Avengers to wake. Having heard Masque’s taser firing, Black Widow arrives and accuses Masque of being behind the attacks, prompting Masque’s angry departure. Admonishing Widow for her mistrust, Hawkeye leaves too. The Avengers begin wildly throwing accusations at one another before realizing Iron Man’s betrayal has sowed paranoia amongst them. Still convinced of Masque’s involvement, the Widow dispatches the team to find her. Wasp angrily confronts Hank about the implant she found, then destroys it and leaves. Hank’s self-recriminations are interrupted when Thor smashes his way through the lab’s floor with Crystal alongside, having woken up in caves under the Mansion, and the trio leave to hunt their attacker. On the Moon, Hercules wakes to find Deathcry severely beaten. A Shi’ar called Za’ken arrives, having dispatched their attackers, mystically heals Deathcry’s injuries, and returns K’rin’s scroll. Deathcry accepts Za’ken’s offer to take her home, and Hecules offers to accompany her. Widow finds Masque in the wrecked lab, but when the metallic tendrils attack, Masque shoves the Widow out of the way and is captured in her place. The cyborg, Benedict, gives the Widow a data disc as “a trade” for Masque before disappearing with her. The next morning, Jarvis greets Captain America at the front door, returned from his forced exile.

Benedict is never identified by name in dialogue; his name only appears on the cover, on an internal sensor display, and in a narrative caption. Benedict’s origins and his connection to the original Madame Masque are revealed in Av #32, ’00.
