The Daily Bugle publicizes a fi ve thousand dollar reward to capture the Schemer but doesn’t say who is offering it. Wanting the money, Spidey braves blizzard conditions, blowing an undercover cop’s cover until finding a Schemer hood’s flophouse. The hood reveals that the Schemer changes his hideout every day. Visiting Gwen at home, Peter feels trapped by her questions about the truck accident and intentionally drops his cup of cocoa, claiming the shakes and chills, to get away. Meanwhile, the Schemer attacks a Kingpin warehouse, telling the men to inform their boss his crime reign is over. Spidey spies on the same warehouse, learning of and spotting the Schemer’s specially rigged car, the only car traveling the snowbound streets. He leaps on it but the Schemer drives into the river to shake him, then uses his hover jets to return to the street. Driving to the Kingpin’s mansion, the Schemer triggers his ultra-sonic circuit breaker to defuse all alarms and confronts the Kingpin in his home office. Vanessa steps between them, only to recognize the Schemer’s eyes. Following the car’s snowy tracks, Spidey arrives and breaks into the mansion. While the Kingpin fi ghts Spidey, the Schemer and Vanessa disappear. The Kingpin follows in his hydraulic-tube elevator, leaving Spidey to wonder why things can’t tie up neatly in real life.
