  • In San Francisco, Spider-Woman rescues an unconscious woman thrown from atop the Golden Gate Bridge. Spider-Woman soon discovers that the person she rescued has lost her memories completely, but a background check reveals her to be Carol Danvers. Professor X is called in by Spider-Woman to help Carol recover her mind; he in turn determines that a new villain, Rogue, stole Carol’s powers and memories. Spider-Woman heads to New York to question the Avengers regarding Carol, but arrives as Rogue attacks the team, leaving Captain America and Thor incapacitated after she absorbs their powers. Simultaneously, Mystique attacks Iron Man at Stark Industries, using a device to paralyze Iron Man’s armor. Back at Avengers Mansion, having acquired enough power, Rogue departs, leaving Spider-Woman to inform the Avengers about Carol’s hospitalization. The Avengers track Rogue’s energy signatures, and discovers her and Mystique launching a prison break at Ryker’s Island. Mystique uses Rogue’s new powers and the paralyzed Iron Man (dropped on the prison like a bomb) to free the captive members of Mystique’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, but the Avengers soon gain the upper hand. With her stolen powers fading, Rogue and Mystique flee, leaving their teammates to be recaptured. Sometime later, the Avengers pay a visit to Carol who is recovering at Xavier’s School. Having recovered much of her memories, she explains that she never loved Marcus, and went off with him only due to mind control. Upon returning to Earth, she felt betrayed by her fellow Avengers and avoided contacting them till now. The Avengers apologize and leave vowing to do better.

Ms. Marvel discovers she’s pregnant (Av #197, ’80). Ms. Marvel meets her “son,” the now adult Marcus Immortus. Various time-lost characters start appearing in New York City. Ms. Marvel agrees to return with Immortus to Limbo (Av #200, ’80). In Limbo, Marcus and Carol spend intimate time together, until Marcus realizes his body is aging, and he dies.

Carol Danvers’ home address is mentioned as 14 Carrol St, Greenwich Village, NY. The Maddy Pryor child seen here is not the same Madelyne Pryor that later becomes the Goblin Queen. Writer Chris Claremont named both after Steeleye Span’s lead vocalist Maddy Pryor, but originally no connection was intended. The “inner child” of Madelyne that appears in UXM #238, ’88 is an in-joke by Claremont; the mental image of Madelyne resembles the child from this annual, but no connection is otherwise known.
