Jocasta, rebuilt by the Gatherers to provide information on the Avengers, manages to get free long enough to attempt to call the Avengers. As there are no Avengers, Hydrobase’s computer calls in reservists: the Captain, Falcon, Hercules, Beast and Hulk, plus the criminal, female Yellowjacket, who couldn’t get the alarm in her helmet to stop. The makeshift Avengers track the signal and rescue Jocasta from the Gatherers, one of whom informs them of the High Evolutionary’s plan to detonate a genetic bomb in the Pacifi c Ocean to transform all of humanity. Heading to Lemuria for clues, the Avengers fi nd it under attack by Atlanteans, who believe Lemuria set the Leviathan (Av #293, ’88) upon them. The Avengers expose this as misinformation spread to bring both races together so they could be easily sterilized. While the two armies provide a distraction, the Avengers board HE’s ship and learn he is using a false religion to motivate his men to obedience. Beast exposes HE’s New-Men priests as evolved animals, triggering a confl ict with the Gatherers, and when HE confronts them they use HE’s equipment to give Hercules greater power to meet HE on equal ground. In defeat, HE sets the evolution mechanism strapped to Hercules to overdrive, evolving him beyond godhood. The Avengers regroup, and while Jocasta sacrifi ces herself blowing the ship up, the Avengers escape and head for home.
