  • Back in Manhattan, Spider-Man spots Randy Robertson and Josh leading a protest against the Daily Bugle for being unfair to minorities. Randy’s father, Bugle City Editor Joe Robertson supports him taking a stand but an angry J. Jonah Jameson shoves Josh, forcing Spidey to whisk JJJ away for his own protection. When Jonah takes a swing at him, Spidey hangs him up on a building cornice. Pleased, the protesters to disperse but Jameson promises Spidey he’s got something waiting for him. Spidey hurries home where he’s giving a party for Harry’s return from the hospital. There, Pete learns that Flash is home from the army for good. Harry arrives and chokes up at the reception. Meanwhile, Jameson comes to Professor Smythe’s lab where Smythe provides him with a spider-shaped Spider-Slayer. That night, Jameson follows Spidey with the Slayer but his controls freeze up before he can strike. Even as Spidey notices mysterious rooftop gizmos, Smythe flips a switch allowing Jonah’s Slayer controls to work again. The Slayer attacks but keeps “malfunctioning,” only forcing Spidey to travel East, finally flinging him into a research hall full of giant computers. As Spidey fights back, riding the Slayer like a bucking bronco, Smythe remotely shuts off Jameson’s controls. He maneuvers the Slayer to knock Spidey unconscious. Previously Smythe had contracted with the city to design the “gizmos” — rooftop video-scanners — as crime prevention tools. Now, his Slayer steals the master unit from the research hall and brings it to him, allowing him to control the scanners. He tests it by following Spider-Man, seeing him unmask, revealing himself as Peter Parker.

Although Smythe knows Peter well from ASM #25 & #28, ’65, he does not recognize him here.
