The Avengers wonder about Black Widow’s allegiances when they see news coverage of her infiltration of a military base. As Hercules enjoys himself at a nightclub, Mad Thinker implements his plan to use his three henchmen, the Triumvirate of Terror, to defeat the Avengers and steal their Stark technology. Hammerhead ambushes Hawkeye in a warehouse, then Pile-Driver subdues Goliath and Wasp at an excavation site. Mad Thinker and Thunderboot attack Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch at Avengers Mansion. The villains gather their prisoners and strap them to a device for execution, but Hercules returns to the mansion, upsetting Mad Thinker’s predetermined calculations of victory. Hercules fights the Triumvirate long enough for the Avengers to awaken and join the battle. The heroes beat the henchmen and Mad Thinker flees.
Black Widow steals plans from a military base to establish her cover as a SHIELD double agent (p). Hercules performs his legendary 8th labor to retrieve the Mares of Diomedes.
Hercules uses the name “Mr. Powers,” invented by the Wasp, for the 1st time. An editor’s note states that this story occurs at the same time as ToS #89/2, ’67. The Triumvirate’s real names were revealed in OHMU HC12, ’09.
