  • Prof. Silas X Cragg, a forgotten Captain America WWII foe, is working on his own super-soldier experiment to defeat Captain America. He soon finds a suitable test subject in an ex-convict down on his luck. Cragg empowers the man with his super-soldier experiment, dubbing him “Man-Brute”. Cragg soon leaves a message at Avengers Mansion asking Captain America to perform an exhibition show at a local orphanage. When Cap arrives he is attacked by the Man-Brute. As the battle carries them inside, the orphans soon realize the fighting is real. One of the orphans, Robert, attacks the villain, who flees from the child. Later at Cragg’s mansion, Man-Brute confronts the scientist, revealing that the orphan who attacked him is his own son, which made him question his attacking Cap. Terrified, Cragg accidentally backs into high-voltage equipment, killing himself. Man-Brute swears never to use his strength again. Later Cap nearly passes the villain on the street, not recognizing the Man-Brute, who has gone back to living in a slum.

Steve Rogers is declared 4-F, is offered a chance to participate in the super-soldier project, is injected with an experimental serum and transforms into a super-soldier. Nazi saboteurs murder Prof. Erskine and Steve becomes Captain America (ToS #63/2, ’65).

Man-Brute’s real name revealed in NAvF, ’06. “Let’s Rap With Cap” includes LOC from J.M. De Matteis, future writer of Captain America.
