When he was a boy, Howard Stark gets into a heated discussion with his son about the nature of a "humane war." When he awakens from unconsciousness, he finds himself on top of a mound of stone bodies, in parts and crumbling after his fight with the Grey Gargoyle. The Gargoyle turns his attention back to Iron Man, bashing back into a building where more innocents are trying to hide. He turns them into stone as well. Meanwhile, Bethany Cabe tries to get the Resilient team to adapt to her security recommendations but finds them very difficult to organize. Iron Man continues the fight against the Gargoyle until Detroit Steel arrives on the scene, arrogantly tellling Stark he's now in control. Within minutes, however, the Gargoyle has ripped open Detroit Steels' armor and turned Doug Johnson into stone. Iron Man creates a repulsor sword and slices through the Gargoyle's head, for the first time creating seeming pain in his foe. But this is just a prelude to a mighty wallop in Iron Man's chest with his hammer, producing a substantial crack across his RT unit. Iron Man has no choice but to flee back to Resilient HQ. Pepper starts crying, alone in her office. She is overwhelmed by all the horrible events occuring in the world and feeling powerless to stop it. Bethany Cabe comforts her. Tony arrives to fix his armor and tells the ladies he has to report to the Avengers. What they don't see is that a dispirited Tony has absconded with a bottle of wine and is carrying it in his arms as he flies off to his destination.
