Madame Web dreams she is pursued by “The Dark One” a shadowy, lumbering beast. In the dream, Spider-Man tries to rescue her but fails. Awakening in her chamber, she calls Peter to request his help. Meanwhile, Black Tom Cassidy, aboard his boat on the Hudson, wants Madame Web’s power to aid in his battles with the X-Men. His impatient partner, the Juggernaut, jumps off the boat, surfaces in Battery Park and begins walking to Madame Web’s building. At the Bugle, Betty Brant Leeds visits, telling Peter she understands he rejected her so she would patch it up with Ned. Madame Web calls Peter there and he runs off. Spidey then confronts the Juggernaut but cannot stop him, nor can the police. Juggernaut reaches Web, pulling her from her life-support chair, sending her into convulsions. Realizing she is useless if she can’t function away from her chair, Juggernaut leaves. Spidey gives her mouth-to-mouth, calls EMS who rush her to the hospital, and vows to stop the Juggernaut or die trying.
