  • As Mary Jane tells Peter her past, the Hobgoblin crashes in on an illegal gambling operation & a backroom bookie parlor, demanding ten percent of the take, part of his and the Rose’s plan to control the city’s gambling interests. Reed Richards tries to communicate with the Symbiote without success. Hobgoblin asks to borrow the Rose’s men to pay a call on Harry Osborn. When the TV news reports Hobgoblin sightings, Peter dons his old costume and vows to defeat him.

Madeline and Philip Watson marry, have daughters Gayle & Mary Jane. Madeline gives up her dreams for Philip who frequently changes teaching jobs, forcing the family to constantly move. MJ copes by becoming the class clown, Gayle by studying dance. Frustrated, Philip strikes Gayle. Madeline & the kids leave him soon after, living with one set of relatives after another including Anna Watson, where MJ first sees Peter Parker. In Pittsburgh, Madeline becomes her cousin’s housekeeper. Gayle meets Timmy Byrnes, giving up her dancing to marry and support him. Gayle gives birth to a son. Timmy feels so trapped that, when Gayle becomes pregnant again, he leaves her. Madeline falls ill, dying before the second child’s birth. MJ, vowing to not waste her life like her mother and sister, deserts Gayle and her family (all before ASM #42, ’66).

Tommy Byrnes named in ASM #291, ’87.
