At a meeting, the Avengers discuss whether to offer membership to Spider-Man. They bring in Daredevil to vouch for the hero’s worthiness then scour the city to find him. Thor succeeds in locating him and he agrees to consider the offer for 24 hours. Although unsure, Peter decides that he cannot ignore the opportunity to do greater good. Spider-Man goes to Avengers Mansion to accept their offer, but is taken aback when Iron Man says that he must pass a test. At first falling into a scuffle with the Avengers, he finally simmers down and agrees. The Avengers want him to find the Hulk, one of their former teammates. Spider-Man heads to the Daily Bugle to impose on Jameson for help and hears from Foswell that the Hulk is at the Gamma Ray Research Center. Spider-Man finds the Hulk. Their fight damages the facility. The Hulk is hit by gamma rays and transforms back into Bruce Banner. Seeing that the Hulk is not just a monster, Spider-Man balks at turning him over to the Avengers. Spider-Man returns to the Avengers and claims that he was unable to find the Hulk, unaware that they had hoped to help Banner with his condition. Having failed at his test, Spider-Man misses his chance to join the Avengers.
